In the decade or so that I have been visiting the Paris Photo art fair, I have tried plenty of different approaches to sifting through the contents of its many booths. The photographic pickings at this year’s ADAA Art Show were decidedly slim, with just a handful of booths showing photography either in part or in full. But the quality was consistently solid, and part of the charm of this fair is its unhurried conservatism, where year after year a mood of reserved engagement can be relied upon to appear. Even when the most risk-taking contemporary work is tossed into this mix, the hushed surroundings seem to temper the flash with a dose of refinement and gravitas. It isn’t often that a new photography-centric art fair decides to dive into the maelstrom of the New York art fair circuit. After the breakdown of the partnership between Paris Photo and AIPAD, New York has been left without a contemporary focused look at the medium – contemporary photography is of course on view at plenty of contemporary art fairs in the city throughout the year, but photographs are often less prominently featured in these fairs (as was the case at the recent Armory Show, here). If there is an overly simple conclusion to be drawn from the sparse scattering of photography on view in the booths at this year’s Armory Show in New York, it is that contemporary gallery owners must think that they can’t sell much photography right now. A nearly endless sea of paintings filled the 200+ booths at the Javits Center this past weekend, with just three photography specialists devoting their booths to the medium (Bruce Silverstein, Edwynn Houk, and Yancey Richardson) and only small pockets of photography to be found elsewhere here and there. For committed photography collectors like ourselves, the run of spring contemporary art fairs here in New York can often feel a little like a frustrating missed opportunity. We enthusiastically look forward to the fairs, and then proceed to systematically work our way through the aisles, eager to visit with gallery owners (and other collectors and curators) from far off locales and to get caught up with the photography they are supporting. As I walked in yesterday to attend this year’s AIPAD Photography Show, I was reminded of a small personal anniversary. I first visited this fair 15 years ago now, and aside from the interruptions of the pandemic years, I have consistently reported on what I have found at the fair over that entire period.
