Year in Review: Most Read Reviews of 2023

As is our tradition here at Collector Daily, as we return to photography after the winter holiday break, we take a quick summarizing look back at the previous year. At the top level, our total volume of reviews in each of our coverage categories was relatively similar to the numbers from the previous year, so some level of continuity or equilibrium seems to have been found from year to year, with museum and gallery reviews finding relative parity with photobook reviews. Richard B. Woodward – An Appreciation

On April 29th, our friend and colleague Richard B. Woodward passed away, and as I think he would have wanted, we’ve already begun to see edited gatherings of his writings for various publications (at the Wall Street Journal here, as an example) starting to pop up. With the benefit of hindsight, 2022 now feels like a year of consolidation in the photobook category here at Collector Daily. Last year, we collectively reviewed a total of 87 photobooks, which was somewhat less than in previous years, but we achieved that total with just three consistent book reviewers, which is a smaller and more focused team than we’ve had in other years. Year in Review: 2021 Photobook Review Statistics

In 2021, we reviewed at total of 108 photobooks here at Collector Daily, which was down from our previous year’s unprecedented high of 156 reviews, but up from the 2019 number of 96 reviews. As the global pandemic continued on through further ebbs and flows, our broader photography coverage re-normalized a bit (as galleries, museums, and art fairs recovered and reinvented themselves), pushing the number of photobook reviews back toward a slower progression upward.
