Over the past decade or two, we have seen many large art collectors decide to make the significant jump to start (and manage) their own smaller museums. Pier 24 Photography, the brainchild of Andy and Mary Pilara, opened in 2010 in one of the empty warehouse locations along the Embarcadero in San Francisco, and essentially overnight, it became of the largest exhibition spaces devoted solely to photography anywhere. It’s been a year of consolidation for the annual AIPAD Photography Show in New York. This 2018 edition marks the fair’s second year at the Pier 94 site (after many years at the Park Avenue Armory), and to a large extent, the organizers have built on the successes that came with the dramatic venue switch last year and have improved many of the short term weaknesses that were exposed during the initial transition. The 2016 spring auction season for photography opens in New York at the beginning of April, with Sotheby’s leading off with its various owner Photographs sale on the 3rd. Headlined by a vintage Man Ray rayograph, the sale touches most of the usual bases, with fewer standout gems than in last year’s sales and substantially less overall consigned value than its competitors. The work of Helmut Newton reappears frequently, interspersed with notable prints by Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Robert Adams, Garry Winogrand, and others. With each passing year, I think I am learning to appreciate the subdued reserve of the ADAA Art Show more and more. Yes, it’s hushed, respectable, and generally conservative in its tastes, but on the spectrum of fair-going experiences, it’s consistently the most comfortable. Of course, this kind of pampering isn’t always consistent with the risk taking and brash aggressiveness we often associate with cutting-edge contemporary photography, but if you’ve got your mindset calibrated right before visiting the fair and you’re in need of a well-edited experience, then a few hours can be well spent here. Even though I have been a visitor to the annual Paris Photo fair for many years now, there is still something exciting about walking along the Seine from my hotel and seeing the huge French flag flying atop the glass vaulted Grand Palais from across the river.
