JTF (just the facts): A group show consisting of a total of 31 photographic/video works made by 24 artists, variously framed and matted, and hung against white walls in a divided gallery space on the second floor of the museum. The photography included in Phillips’ recent New Now sale in London generally performed to expectations. While several of the top photo lots failed to sell, the overall Buy-In rate for photography came in at a respectable 18%, and a few positive surprises helped keep the Total Sale Proceeds above the low end of the aggregate pre-sale range.... For photography collectors like us, broad-based contemporary art fairs like the Armory Show in New York provide a special kind of art experience. The photography included in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Auctions travels relatively normal pathways, led by routine top lots from Andreas Gursky and Richard Prince. What’s more intriguing is the migration of a handful of secondary works by Eggleston, Newton, and Mapplethorpe across from the photography sales (where they would normally reside) into the contemporary art day sale, perhaps a sign of growing (or cultivating) interest on the part of contemporary collectors. Christie’s First Open/LDN sale at its South Kensington location gathers together a grab bag of lower priced contemporary material, with an eclectic selection of photography on the blocks. While the bubble-like frothiness of the upcoming Contemporary Art sales in New York is already being much discussed, photography collectors will be hard pressed to find much evidence of speculative excess in Phillips’ offerings; for the first time in recent memory, there isn’t a single photograph available in the prime time Evening sale. While this is certainly just a quirk of the arrival rate of consignments, it does leave the auctions without many photographic attention grabbers.
