JTF (just the facts): A group show consisting of photographs and video works by 16 contemporary photographers, variously framed and matted, and hung against white walls on the second and third floors of the museum. The show was organized in New York by Sara Raza, in collaboration with Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), Paris, where the exhibit was curated by Frédérique Dolivet and Pascal Hoël. The day sale portion of the recent Pier 24 Photography sale at Sotheby’s continued the positive momentum that began the night before (results here). Once again, the overall Buy-In rate was tiny (just 3%, plus 4 withdrawals) and there were even more positive surprises (16 during the day) to keep the mood high. The top lot Richard Avedon print found a buyer above its estimate range, and other prints by Avedon did similarly well. While the shifting terminology for what is defined as contemporary art at Christie’s (as seen here in 20th/21st Century and Post-War and Contemporary Art sales) offers ongoing possibilities for confusion and annoyance, the photographs included in the recent sales in London performed well. The top lot Gerhard Richter strip image found a buyer above £900K, and with just one pass against more than 20 photo lots on offer, the extremely low Buy-In rate for photography kept the numbers up. An overly high Buy-In rate (of nearly 39%) softened the results of the various owner photography sale at Christie’s in Paris last week. A coal bunker typology by Bernd and Hilla Becher took the top lot honors, and while there were a number of positive surprises, they weren’t enough to pull the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly €1.3M) up to catch the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... A touch of softness in the highest price tier was all it took to weaken the results of the Photographs sale at Phillips in New York last week. The overall Buy-In rate came in just over 30%, but the passed lots were weighted toward the top end. While a Moholy-Nagy photogram jumped up to $375K and there were a few additional positive surprises, they weren’t enough to pull the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly $3.5M) above the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... With no lots in the evening sale, the photography included in Sotheby’s recent Contemporary Art auctions in London seemed like an afterthought. The top Hiroshi Sugimoto seascape found a buyer, but with an overall Buy-In rate for photography near 60%, even with a few random surprises, the Total Sale Proceeds for photography came in well below the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... The photography included in Phillips’ entry level New Now sale in New York earlier this week generally met expectations.
