The photography included in the powerhouse Emily Fisher Landau Collection sales at Sotheby’s last week in New York performed admirably, aside from the top photo lot Barbara Kruger print which failed to sell. Everything else on offer (photographically that is) found a buyer, with 5 positive surprises jumping up to even higher heights. After the withdrawal of a Christian Marclay multi-image collage, the photographs on offer at Phillips’ recent New Now sale in London went white glove, with everything selling through. The top lot John Baldessari work sold within its estimate range, and two Gerhard Richter overpainted photographs jumped up to unexpectedly big prices, leading to Total Sale Proceeds (of just over £425K) that came in solidly above the high end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... The photography included in the various modern and contemporary art sales at Van Ham in Cologne last week (including a handful of photographic NFTs) performed well. The overall Buy-In rate for photography hovered near 25%, and with the top lot Cindy Sherman print finding a buyer above its estimate range to juice the numbers, the Total Sale Proceeds for photography (of roughly €730K) came in just below the top end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... Given the breadth of art normally on view at the annual ADAA Art Show, photography is generally only a minor subtext to the fair. This year was no different – out of the roughly 70 booths at the Park Avenue Armory, just five were filled with solo shows of photography (or of artists who use or used photography as one of their primary modes of expression), with a handful of other photographic works sprinkled throughout the rest of the fair. There weren’t many photographs included in Christie’s recent Post-War and Contemporary Art Day sale in London, but those that were available performed well. A two-panel John Baldessari overpainted work from 1990 took the top lot honors.
