The fifth installment of the liquidation of the holdings of the Pier 24 Photography museum took place earlier this week at Sotheby’s, with a no reserve selection of works. On top of the two sales last May that brought in a combined tally of more that $10.6M (here and here), a smaller sale of anonymous imagery this October (here) that added another $85K, and yet another $2M slice of works several weeks later (here), this sale handled some of what was left. The day sale portion of the recent Pier 24 Photography sale at Sotheby’s continued the positive momentum that began the night before (results here). Once again, the overall Buy-In rate was tiny (just 3%, plus 4 withdrawals) and there were even more positive surprises (16 during the day) to keep the mood high. The top lot Richard Avedon print found a buyer above its estimate range, and other prints by Avedon did similarly well. Led by Richard Avedon’s Beatles portfolio, the various owner Photographs auction at Phillips in London last week performed well. A selection of Ellen von Unwerth polaroids (including several of Kate Moss) jumped up above their modest estimate ranges, and with the help of a handful of additional positive surprises, the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly £2.3M) fell in the middle of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... An unexpectedly large group of positive surprises drove up the results of the various owner Photographs sale at Phillips last week. The results from Sotheby’s various owner Photographs sale in New York this week were quietly uneven. With an overall Buy-In rate near a third, the auction needed both the sale of the top lot (a copy of William Henry Fox Talbot’s The Pencil of Nature) and a number of positive surprises to pick up the slack. Divided into 12 sections, the presentation is roughly chronological, from 1961 to the present. 258 of the prints are vintage, 332 are not.
