Aside from the withdrawal of the top photo lot Richard Prince work, the photography included in the last tranche of the Emily Fisher Landau Collection sale at Sotheby’s last week in New York generally met expectations. In an online sale where most of the lots had no reserve, the overall Buy-In rate came in at a tidy 0.00%, leading to Total Sale Proceeds for photography (of roughly $355K) that fell near the top end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... JTF (just the facts): A large group show, containing the works of 39 different artists/photographers, variously framed and matted, and hung against white walls in the large divided gallery space. The show was curated by Kathy Ryan and Lesley Martin. The exhibit consists of 13 separate modules. While the big Gursky didn’t sell, Christie’s was still able to tally the largest photography proceeds in the Contemporary Art sales in London last week. While the overall Buy-In rate was similar to that of Phillips the day before (just over 31%), the top end lots were pretty soft in these two sales. With the absence of the income from the Gursky, the Total Sale Proceeds for photography missed the estimate range by a wide margin; if the Gursky had sold for its low estimate, the results would have fallen just below the range.
