This selection of Asian photography was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. The liquidation of the holdings of the Pier 24 Photography museum continued last week at Sotheby’s with a further selection of works, including a deeper run of prints by Robert Adams, Stephen Shore, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Lewis Baltz, and others. This sale marked the fourth sale of works from the museum, following up two sales last May that brought in a combined tally of more that $10.6M (here and here), and a much smaller sale of anonymous imagery earlier this month (here). The top photo lot Hiroshi Sugimoto architecture image found a buyer just above its estimate range, and an additional positive surprise in the form of a Horst fashion image from the 1940s helped add to the tally. For the second time in the last month, a big ticket top photography lot was withdrawn from an auction just prior to the sale. In this case, it was a Richard Prince cowboy print, estimated at $400000-600000, (almost) on offer in Christie’s recent Post-War & Contemporary Art Day Sale, Featuring The Collection of Morton and Barbara Mandel in New York. Its departure left a Robert Mapplethorpe print to take up the top lot mantle.
