This selection of Asian photography was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. This collection consists of 20 works made by Asian photographers between roughly 1930 and the present. Competition was similarly tough to join this group, with well recognized names like Nobuyoshi Araki, Shin Yanigasawa, Shohei Nishino, Eikoh Hosoe, Miho Kajioka, Pixy Liao, and others ultimately left off the team, but the overall “collection” feels somewhat more uneven than the other three, perhaps in terms ... JTF (just the facts): A broad group show containing some 250 works from 29 photographers/artists, variously framed and matted, and hung against white and grey walls in a series of 6 rooms and the entry area at the Japan Society and a series of 4 rooms and the entry area at the Grey Art Gallery (NYU). The exhibit was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and curated by Yasufumi Nakamori. A catalog of the exhibition was published by the MFAH (here) and is now sold out. JTF (just the facts): A total of 38 black and white photographs, framed in black and matted, and hung against white walls in the single room gallery space. All of the works are gelatin silver prints, made between 1964 and 1978; 28 are modern prints made in 2014 or 2015 and 10 are vintage prints. Physical sizes range from roughly 6×9 to 9×13 (or reverse), and the modern prints are available in editions of 10. A small catalog of the exhibit with an essay by Janet Koplos is available from the gallery.
