This selection of Asian photography was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. For further background on how and why this “collection” was formed, and the structure of the resulting slideshow, visit the introductory page (here). This collection consists of 20 works made by Asian photographers between roughly 1930 and the present. Competition was similarly tough to join this group, with well recognized names like Nobuyoshi Araki, Shin Yanigasawa, Shohei Nishino, Eikoh Hosoe, Miho Kajioka, Pixy Liao, and others ultimately left off the team, but the overall “collection” feels somewhat more uneven than the other three, perhaps in terms ... The day sale portion of the recent Pier 24 Photography sale at Sotheby’s continued the positive momentum that began the night before (results here). Once again, the overall Buy-In rate was tiny (just 3%, plus 4 withdrawals) and there were even more positive surprises (16 during the day) to keep the mood high. The top lot Richard Avedon print found a buyer above its estimate range, and other prints by Avedon did similarly well. In the end, the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly $3.5M) cleared the top end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range with room to spare.... Read more at Collector Daily.

Phillips’ recent various owner Photographs sale in London performed right in line with expectations. At roughly 30%, the Buy-In rate was about average, and the 10 positive surprises sprinkled across the sale helped perk things up. Overall, the Total Sale Proceeds fell in the middle of aggregate pre-sale estimate, and when compared with the other two major auction houses, Phillips brought home the most photographic revenue in this short London swing.... Perhaps in an effort to break up the monotony of a continuous stream of auction lots, Phillips’ upcoming various owner Photographs sale in London has a number of discrete sections. There are two small single consignor collections, with distinct personalities. And there are two ULTIMATE sections, each following the usual rules of last print/sold out edition/scarce print, one in a varied group and a second centered on images from Vogue. As a result, the sale works hard to unearth some rarities to go along with the more predictable fare. A pair of important vintage works from Fukase and Moriyama are worth keeping an ...
