This selection of Asian photography was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. Led by a string of Irving Penn Small Trades portraits, the various owner Photographs auction at Phillips in London last week performed admirably. The sale generally hit all the marks: low overall Buy-In rate (under 7%), a number of positive surprises (15), and a top lot Helmut Newton print that sold over its estimate range. JTF (just the facts): A total of 39 framed gelatin silver prints and 33 framed chromogenic prints, measuring between 9 x 6 inches and approximately 60.5 x 41.5 inches, hung salon style on variously colored walls on the gallery’s two floors. Edition numbers for the color photographs range from 8 to 20; no edition information is provided for the black-and-white photos. It’s been a year of consolidation for the annual AIPAD Photography Show in New York. This 2018 edition marks the fair’s second year at the Pier 94 site (after many years at the Park Avenue Armory), and to a large extent, the organizers have built on the successes that came with the dramatic venue switch last year and have improved many of the short term weaknesses that were exposed during the initial transition. JTF (just the facts): A broad group show containing some 250 works from 29 photographers/artists, variously framed and matted, and hung against white and grey walls in a series of 6 rooms and the entry area at the Japan Society and a series of 4 rooms and the entry area at the Grey Art Gallery (NYU). The exhibit was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and curated by Yasufumi Nakamori. A catalog of the exhibition was published by the MFAH (here) and is now sold out.
