With just 40% of the lots that sold selling at or above their estimate ranges at the Autumn Photo Auction at OstLicht in Vienna last week, even with an overall Buy-In rate near 25%, there were just too many passed lots and low priced purchases to generate much excitement. This selection of Asian photography was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. This collection consists of 20 works made by Asian photographers between roughly 1930 and the present. Competition was similarly tough to join this group, with well recognized names like Nobuyoshi Araki, Shin Yanigasawa, Shohei Nishino, Eikoh Hosoe, Miho Kajioka, Pixy Liao, and others ultimately left off the team, but the overall “collection” feels somewhat more uneven than the other three, perhaps in terms ... Weakness in the top price tier flattened the results of the Photographs sale at Christie’s last week. The top lot Moholy-Nagy print failed to sell, as did high priced lots from Man Ray and Alfred Stieglitz. An overall Buy-In rate over 35% didn’t help the situation, nor did just two positive surprises. All of the works are c-prints, made in 2015. The prints are shown in two sizes – 26×38 (or reverse), in editions of 10, and 11×16 (or reverse), also in editions of 10. As I sat roughly shoehorned into my redeye flight from New York in advance of yesterday’s elegant Paris Photo opening, I found myself pondering the impenetrable question of what I was really trying to accomplish at this year’s fair. Paris Photo has clearly secured its place as the premier event on the art calendar for photography collectors; it’s bigger, broader, and better presented than any other photography fair out there.
