This selection of Asian photography was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. For further background on how and why this “collection” was formed, and the structure of the resulting slideshow, visit the introductory page (here). This collection consists of 20 works made by Asian photographers between roughly 1930 and the present. Competition was similarly tough to join this group, with well recognized names like Nobuyoshi Araki, Shin Yanigasawa, Shohei Nishino, Eikoh Hosoe, Miho Kajioka, Pixy Liao, and others ultimately left off the team, but the overall “collection” feels somewhat more uneven than the other three, perhaps in terms ... My first trip to Paris Photo as a photography collector and writer came a decade ago now in 2013, and so aside from the interruptions of the pandemic, I’ve made a decent number of arguably systematic attempts to summarize what can be found in its many booths. Such reports aren’t “reviews” or “criticism” in the traditional sense of those words, but instead edited gatherings of notable pictures, designed to give both the reader from afar and the recently returned attendee a glimpse of what caught my particular eye. Over the years, I have applied several different structured filters to sift ... Read more at Collector Daily.

When in checked into my hotel room after arriving from New York on the overnight flight to Paris earlier this week, the usually standard note from the general manager welcoming me had a surprisingly relevant and appropriate message. It read: “I’m looking for the unexpected. I’m looking for things I’ve never seen before.” And the speaker of this quote was apparently Robert Mapplethorpe. Was this just a strange coincidence, or did my hotel actually prepare for the photo people coming to town for Paris Photo? Whatever the case, that inspirational words provided a seemingly straightforward way to think about (and ... Read more at Collector Daily.

A few days before I left to make my annual trip to Paris Photo this year, someone asked me what I was hoping to get out of the journey, having made the same pilgrimage every year for many years now. The unspoken question that went along with this query was “surely it can’t be that different every time?” My quick on-the-spot and unrehearsed answer was that I go to Paris Photo to see the work I don’t (and likely can’t) see in New York. And even though there is undeniably some similarity to the fair year in and year out, ... Read more at Collector Daily.

Thunderous rain poured down last Friday, threatening to wash away the eager visitors to the first public day of this year’s Frieze New York Art Fair. But once past the gurgling walk from the ferry and inside the dry confines of the airy tent, it was largely business as usual, aside from the washes of deafening rumble coming from the water hitting the roof. Amid the crowds of well dressed collectors and art lovers going about their business (and business it is, of course), I did see one unlikely out-of-place figure. Dressed in the military uniform and sunglasses of the con man from “Catch Me If ... Read more at Collector Daily.

As the photography world woke up to the news of an unexpected reality in the form of the stunning American election results, it was as if all the convivial effervesce that typically fills the air at Paris Photo had been suddenly and abruptly whooshed away. Of course, it is always wonderful to catch up with people we only see once a year in Paris, but the mood that descended on the Grand Palais for the opening day this year was somberly grim and unusually quiet – faces were drawn and serious, and friends from around the globe shook their heads in dumbfounded amazement and ... Even though I have been a visitor to the annual Paris Photo fair for many years now, there is still something exciting about walking along the Seine from my hotel and seeing the huge French flag flying atop the glass vaulted Grand Palais from across the river. For a photography collector like myself, it’s the tinglingly familiar announcement of something wonderful to come. Of course, an art fair is an art fair, and Paris Photo has many of the same galleries, panels, and work to be found in New York and elsewhere. But given its diversity and scale, along with its ability to ... Read more at Collector Daily.

Listen closely and you’ll hear the murmur of change in the air at this year’s AIPAD Photography Show. From the addition of “New York” to the fair title to the behind-the-scenes grading of booths to facilitate a more rigorous vetting process going forward, there’s a sense that this longtime association-driven photography gathering is striving to bring itself into the tougher competitive fray of the now ubiquitous 21st century art fair. The quiet rumble is becoming louder, and it’s pushing to make the fair even more crisp and contemporary, perhaps ultimately eliminating the signature flip bins and crowded walls that once ... I’ve come to think that visiting the annual AIPAD Photography Show is something akin to being a geologist taking core samples – depending on where you decide to plant your shovel and dig, the specimens will differ widely. So based on your interests and your eye, you might find it to be a show of iconic vintage trophies, or 19th century vistas, or process driven abstractions, or Japanese photography, and of course, it’s all of these things and many, many more. While the fair still suffers from failing to attract many of the well known contemporary art galleries that regularly exhibit new ...
