After more than a year of pandemic-induced isolation and hiatus, Paris Photo made its return to the photo calendar this week with a surprising amount of upbeat enthusiasm and energy. With the French COVID pass meticulously checked at the entry gate, there was no vaccination fuss or controversy, and inside the crowd was largely masked but comfortable and convivial. When in checked into my hotel room after arriving from New York on the overnight flight to Paris earlier this week, the usually standard note from the general manager welcoming me had a surprisingly relevant and appropriate message. It read: “I’m looking for the unexpected. I’m looking for things I’ve never seen before.” And the speaker of this quote was apparently Robert Mapplethorpe. Even though I have been a visitor to the annual Paris Photo fair for many years now, there is still something exciting about walking along the Seine from my hotel and seeing the huge French flag flying atop the glass vaulted Grand Palais from across the river.
