Between the upsets of the pandemic and other scheduling restarts, it’s been three years since the last AIPAD Photography Show in New York. Back in 2019, the annual photography fair was in its most optimistic and expansive form, filling the space of Pier 94 with over 100 gallery booths and some 30 photobook publisher tables. Two years ago, when I made my annual report on Paris Photo, instead of choosing one photograph from every booth at the fair (as has often been my approach), I decided to measure the inclusion of female photographers by only selecting images made by women. It was an instructive experience on many fronts, in that it forced me to see what was being shown and what was conspicuously absent, and who was actively promoting photographs by women and who wasn’t (the original report can be found here). It’s been a year of consolidation for the annual AIPAD Photography Show in New York. This 2018 edition marks the fair’s second year at the Pier 94 site (after many years at the Park Avenue Armory), and to a large extent, the organizers have built on the successes that came with the dramatic venue switch last year and have improved many of the short term weaknesses that were exposed during the initial transition.
