My last trip to an art fair was in early March of 2020. It was the Armory Show, here in New York, and I vividly remember feeling like I was taking an as-yet-entirely-undefined risk in attending. I wrapped my face with a scarf (this was before wearing a mask became commonplace), awkwardly avoided shaking hands, and tried to get in and out without lingering too long, not really knowing what the consequences of gathering with so many people might be. The photography at this year’s Frieze New York art fair seems to divide itself into two very distinctly separate camps – the brand new and the rediscovered old – with very little in between. Fresh from the framer works that were made in the past year or two are almost evenly balanced by a parade of somewhat lesser known photographs from the 1970s and 1980s. The consistency of this duality implies that a model that works for galleries is converging toward a repeatable formula. As I sat roughly shoehorned into my redeye flight from New York in advance of yesterday’s elegant Paris Photo opening, I found myself pondering the impenetrable question of what I was really trying to accomplish at this year’s fair. Paris Photo has clearly secured its place as the premier event on the art calendar for photography collectors; it’s bigger, broader, and better presented than any other photography fair out there.
