This selection of photographs made using alternative processes and techniques was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. The results from the paired photography sales at Lempertz in Cologne earlier this week didn’t ruffle too many feathers. An Otto Steinert luminogram was the top outcome of the sales, and a large number of lower priced positive surprises helped keep the momentum up. But the overall Buy-In rate of roughly 45% ultimately dampened the results, leading to Total Sale Proceeds of roughly €375K, below the aggregate pre-sale high estimate.... The results from the Photographie sale at Grisebach in Berlin earlier this week were largely uneventful. The overall Buy-In was exactly 40%, so even with a dozen positive surprises to add to the momentum, the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly €475K) came in below the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... The summary statistics from the Photographie sale at Grisebach in Berlin last week would have us believe that nothing much out of the ordinary occurred at this sale. The overall Buy-In rate topped 42%, the top lot found a buyer within its estimate range, and the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly €575K) came in just above the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range. A group of 70 portraits by August Sander, printed by Gunther Sander in the early 1960s and sold as a single lot, soared to a price of nearly €950K, covering up what was otherwise a relatively soft Photographie sale at Grisebach in Berlin last week. There were plenty of bargains to be had, with just 51% of the lots that sold selling in or above their estimate ranges. The overall Buy-In rate came in at a respectable 21% and the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly €1.4M) landed well above the high end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.... Two self portraits by Gertrud Arndt soared above their estimate ranges (one to more than 10X its high estimate) in the recent Modern and Contemporary Photographs sale at Grisebach in Berlin.
