The burgeoning world of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens officially collided with the existing world of fine art photography last week at the various owner Photographs sale at Christie’s in New York. While in other times, the fact that the Met was deaccessioning a number of duplicates (including a string of Robert Frank prints) might have been the top story of the sale, but when Justin Aversano’s Twin Flames NFT and set of 100 prints jumped to $1.1M (against an estimate of $100000-150000) in the first lot of the sale, the rest of the action became altogether secondary. JTF (just the facts): A total of 57 black and white photographic works, variously framed and matted, and hung against light gray walls in the main gallery space and the book alcove. All of the works are gelatin silver prints, or collages/composites of gelatin silver prints, made between 1958 and 2007, with most of the prints vintage/early. The works on offer in the various owner Photographs sale at Phillips earlier this week performed solidly. An elaborately overpainted Peter Beard image of Marilyn Monroe was the top outcome, and with an overall Buy-In rate just over 22%, the Total Sale Proceeds came in just above the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate.... It’s been a year of consolidation for the annual AIPAD Photography Show in New York. This 2018 edition marks the fair’s second year at the Pier 94 site (after many years at the Park Avenue Armory), and to a large extent, the organizers have built on the successes that came with the dramatic venue switch last year and have improved many of the short term weaknesses that were exposed during the initial transition.
