Yesterday morning, we published our Part 3 booth-by-booth summary of Paris Photo in the hazy wake of the frightening terrorist attacks here in Paris, not entirely sure of what was happening in the city or of what might come next. A day later, we now know that as part of a national period of mourning for the victims, all of the public buildings throughout the area will remain closed, including the Grand Palais. So the fair is closed, and will not reopen. As I sat roughly shoehorned into my redeye flight from New York in advance of yesterday’s elegant Paris Photo opening, I found myself pondering the impenetrable question of what I was really trying to accomplish at this year’s fair. Paris Photo has clearly secured its place as the premier event on the art calendar for photography collectors; it’s bigger, broader, and better presented than any other photography fair out there. Paris Photo 2013 is fabulous. Fabulous may seem fatuous, but it describes the proceedings, which have been more fully outlined elsewhere on this site. Here are some observations from another perspective. First of all, there is the fair itself. It is literally unbelievable. There are thousands of photographs of different vintages and tastes, presented handsomely by a range of exhibitors and book sellers, from major houses like Gagosian, David Zwirner, et al to the solo operator, private dealers (Lumière des Roses). While there are plenty of well run art fairs in New York every year to keep us locals happy, Paris Photo has cemented its place as the singular standout event on the art calendar for photography collectors. Held in the expansive vaulted space of the Grand Palais, it brings together a wider selection of galleries than the AIPAD show and smartly crosses into the world of photobooks with booths from publishers and rare book dealers alike.
