This selection of works by Black photographers was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. The photography results from Christie’s recent First Open online sale were largely uneventful. Two years ago, when I made my annual report on Paris Photo, instead of choosing one photograph from every booth at the fair (as has often been my approach), I decided to measure the inclusion of female photographers by only selecting images made by women. This year’s Armory Show began with a bit of pre-fair scheduling drama. Last minute structural problems with Pier 92 forced the organizers to move the booths planned for that pier to nearby Pier 90. But this opportunistic reshuffle didn’t come without meaningful consequences, however.
