All of the works are chemical treatment on RA-4 paper, made in 2014, 2014/2021, or 2015/2022. Physical sizes range from roughly 24×23 to 92×30 inches (or the reverse) and all the works are unique. So much has changed about our lives since the last time the Armory Show was in New York (in early March of 2020), we would be right to assume that whenever we came back to the Armory, things might be radically different. This year’s Armory Show began with a bit of pre-fair scheduling drama. Last minute structural problems with Pier 92 forced the organizers to move the booths planned for that pier to nearby Pier 90. But this opportunistic reshuffle didn’t come without meaningful consequences, however. For photography collectors like us, broad-based contemporary art fairs like the Armory Show in New York provide a special kind of art experience. While single subject photography fairs offer a relatively continuous flow, where each and every booth has photography on offer to explore, visiting the Armory is something more like heading out on an exciting treasure hunt, where the action happens in bursts and flashes in between longer stretches of relative quiet. When I first started to actually take real written notes at art fairs, more then a decade ago now, I began with the idea that it would be interesting to simply tally everything (all the photography that is) that was on view at a place like the Armory Show. This way, we could get an aggregate view of what was being offered, and then use that data to potentially discern some high level patterns, in the vein of more Shermans and less Germans in a given year for example. For those who haven’t closed up their collecting activities for the reminder of the year, Phillips has shoehorned one of its New Now mid-range contemporary art sales into usually slow December later this week. It’s a mixed bag of leftovers, but with a handful of notable contemporary names and up and comers buried amid the clutter. Phillips opens its fall season with a New Now sale in New York later this month. As a compendium of entry-level and mid range contemporary work, the sale leans toward newer names, and photography on offer follows this lead. While every year the sprawling experience of the Armory show is relatively the same, at least in overall feel, I try to bring a new collector-centric mindset to the proceedings each time I visit to keep things fresh.
