Auction Results: Photographs Signature Auction, October 17, 2023 @Heritage

The results from the Photographs Signature Auction last week at Heritage were generally uneventful. The top lot Robert Mapplethorpe flower print found a buyer below its estimate range, and was tied for the top lot honors with an Ansel Adams moonrise. The overall Buy-In rate inched up near 35%, and with just 1 positive surprise and too many of the lots that did sell doing so below their estimates, the Total Sale Proceeds (of roughly $825K) came in below the low end of the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.

The top lot by High estimate was lot 73347, Robert Mapplethorpe, Calla Lily, 1988, estimated at $60000-80000; it was also the top outcome of the sale at $50000, tied with lot 73028, Ansel Adams, Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941/1973-1977, estimated at $30000-50000, also sold at $50000 (images above, via Heritage.)

Only 36.89% of the lots that sold had proceeds in or above the estimate range and there was just 1 positive surprise in the sale (defined as having proceeds of at least double the high estimate) (image above, via Heritage):
